2018 Latino Education Summit:

Language, Culture, and Identity in the Education of Latinx Students

The Foundation for Hispanic Education in partnership with Santa Clara University School of Education and Counseling Psychology are excited to present the 3rd Annual Latino Education Summit: Silicon Valley. This year's theme is: Language, Culture, and Identity in the Education of Latinx Students. The Summit will be taking place on April 21, 2018 at Santa Clara University.

This year's Summit will include presentations focused on improving work with Latinx and English Language Learner students as a teacher and a leader. Presentations will include a discussion of improving school culture, fostering change in schools, improving our teaching practice with ELL students, and more.

Opening Keynote Speaker is Jeff Duncan-Andrade, Founder of Roses in Concrete School and Associate Professor at San Francisco State University. Jeff works closely with teachers, school site leaders, and school district officials nationally, and as far abroad as Brazil and New Zealand, to help them develop classroom practices and school cultures that foster self-confidence, esteem, and academic success among all students. His research interests and publications span the areas of urban schooling and curriculum change, urban teacher development and retention, critical pedagogy, and cultural and ethnic studies. Closing the Summit, is Keynote Speaker Karen Valdes, Member, CA State Board of Education, and Assistant Superintendent, Hemet Unified School District. Dr. Valdes received her bachelor’s degree and elementary credential, as well as her master’s degree, in educational psychology, with an emphasis in special education, from Loyola Marymount University. Dr. Valdes completed her doctorate in organizational leadership at Argosy University. She holds special education credentials as well as a resource specialist program certificate.
