2017 2nd Annual Latino Education Summit: Silicon Valley
Amplifying the Language of the Disciplines
English language learners (ELL) are a diverse group of students and vary in their ability to communicate in English and their home language. Some ELL are recent arrivals who struggle to understand and produce spoken and written English. Many, however, are U.S. born students who struggle with the English language expected in school and, more specifically, in different content areas. By focusing on the language expected in the content areas, we can support ELL language skills as they acquire content knowledge.
In the 2017 Latino Education Summit, we will discuss the specific language ELL will be expected to interpret and produce in math, science, language arts and social studies. In addition, we will address the cross-disciplinary language of argumentation (a key skill in the new standards) and content-area language expectations in dual language settings. Attendees will have the choice to attend two of 11 breakouts -- nine on learning and teaching methods and two on legal issues related to immigration in the new political climate with Santa Clara University's law school faculty.
